Thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers: the industry processes plastics in an infinite number of different variants, with very different properties and for a wide variety of applications. Almost all plastic components and plastic objects have to be marked. The markings, codes and labels are usually used for product traceability, quality assurance, consumer information and internal or external logistics. In order for markings on plastic to be successful as desired, the plastic compound used and the marking technology must first be matched to each other in the best possible way for each application. The properties of the plastic (smooth or porous, rigid or flexible), the component geometry (simple or complex) and the marking requirements (permanent or easy to remove, weather or chemical resistant) determine which coding and marking technologies are best suited.

Depending on the industry and sector for which plastic items are manufactured, the component markings and product codes also have to comply with legal requirements or industry standards. Not only components for the automotive and electrical engineering sectors are marked and labeled, but also household items and packaging for a wide range of industries.
