Sawmills, wood factories and pallet factories have two things in common: wood processing produces a lot of dust and is carried out at very high speeds. Coding and marking solutions for the wood processing industry therefore have to be designed to be robust. In addition to sawdust and wood dust, plant-related vibrations and fluctuating temperatures are among the challenging environmental conditions for coding and marking solutions in the wood industry. As markings are usually carried out in-line in the processing or production process, the coding systems used also have to keep pace with the high system speeds. The most important markings in the timber industry and in pallet production are internationally prescribed seals for product marking, such as the CE marking, information on wood grading as well as the EPAL mark and IPPC logo on pallets. Boards, beams, plywood products, material boards and other wood products also have to be marked with information on the manufacturer and origin of the product to enable traceability. In addition, the wood processing industry also requires codes and labels to control internal and external logistics.
Challenges of marking in the wood industry
- Marking at sometimes very high system speeds
- Resistance to dust, vibrations and temperature fluctuations
- Direct marking of irregularly grown wooden surfaces
- Marking with variable data for serialization
- Compliance with EPAL standards for pallet production
